Continuing professional development for commercial drivers in Germany is mandated by law and affects a vast target group: approximately 580,000 truck and bus drivers must demonstrate 35 hours of further training every five years under the Professional Driver Qualification Act (BKrFQG). This translates to around four million training hours per year, all of which previously had to be delivered in in-person sessions. For logistics companies, bus operators, and freight businesses, this represented an enormous organisational and financial burden: drivers were unavailable for days at a time, training rooms had to be booked, instructors coordinated, and participants released from daily operations. In times of an acute driver shortage, every training day further exacerbated the already strained staffing situation. At the same time, existing face-to-face formats offered little flexibility — rigid schedules, long travel distances, and no options for individualised learning led to high dropout rates and low learner motivation. BKF Online-Schulungs GmbH and SVG Akademie were therefore looking for a solution that fully meets the regulatory requirements while drastically reducing training overhead — without compromising on educational quality.
